d-WHOAH.com Newsletter July 31, 2008
Hello Everyone!

This newsletter is a tiny bit late if you've already checked the website today, but moving and job-searching is exhausting! I have two new pieces up on the site now from some freelance work I've been doing:
1) LYRIC 20th Anniversary Logo (found in the "work" section under "LYRIC 20th"): I came up with several logo directions for the Lavendar Youth Recreation and Information Center (LYRIC)'s 20th Anniversary Celebration. This San Francisco organization creates a safe haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth to meet and gather. It also organizes events for them to learn to be confident leaders of tomorrow. Through the logos, I tried to convey a sense of unity, growth, progression, safety, fun, and of course a reflection of the PRIDE community.
The colors I chose create a potential system from which each of the four events that comprise the celebration could be represented, and while they do show a gradation of color similar to the rainbow flag, the color shifts from the traditional rainbow is also meant to show the community's vibrance and progressive growth.
Three LYRIC 20 Years logo directions With the first (and favored) option, LYRIC liked the idea of emphasizing the house or safe haven idea (built with 20 circles in progressive colors) and
the design firm I was freelancing for liked the direction of replacing the "A" in "years" best.

In the second option I noticed the "we" in "twenty" and drew it out to emphasize the solidarity of the community to support and help grow one another. Thinking about the by-line (which was given to me over the phone) of "altogether different" or "all together different," I felt both "altogether" and "all together" held significant and separate meanings that spoke to their mission.

The third option emphasizes an idea of a protective sanctuary through its concentric circles, with purple (or the color closest to lavendar) as the outermost layer - representing both its protective role as well as its role in being the at the forefront of the lbtqq community's interactions with others. An egg shaped 0 option was chosen to also hint at the idea of the potential to grow and become something even bigger.
2) Kidlette Onesies (found in the "play" secion under "kidlette"): Kidlette is a fledgling company with a
big heart. Two long-time business partners and soon-to-be grandmothers wanted to start up
a children's clothing company where part of the proceeds would go towards benefitting endangered species. They wanted to begin with a series of onesies, each printed with an endangered animal on organic American Apparel tees, and asked me to help unify their differing tastes and design their first line. The sea-turtle, tiger, and polar bear were chosen in muted and subtle tones, and I put some of my favorite stylistic directions up for you to see.

If any of them particularly strike your fancy, please let me know as this project is still in the works and your feedback is greatly appreciated for research purposes!

Well, it's back to moving and searching for me. You can check these pieces out at:
